Foul hooked barbel brings big match glory. For the first time this season, one of the River Avon’s legendary barbel accounted for most of the winning weight in an Evesham Festival qualifying match, as former Festival Champion Rob South banked an 8lb beast from peg 43. Fishing flatfloat and chopped worm tactics on the pole, Rob did well to land the fish, which he foul hooked in the fork of the tail! In addition to the barbel, the Birmingham rod had six good eels, also on flatfloat tactics for a final total weight of 12-1-0. Runner up was Leicester based rod, Pete Jayes, who caught on his favoured hemp tactics from peg 15 on the Crown Meadow.

The introduction of a new technology that will dramatically cut transfer of fish disease is the result of leading lights from British industry pulling together. BSafe - short for 'bacteria safe - began life in the mind of avid angler Derek Willan, who believes that all anglers should be doing their bit to safeguard fish health in the UK. Derek explained: "Virus outbreaks were getting all the press but research revealed that the bigger killers were a relatively small group of bacteria which the Environment Agency confirmed were present in the majority of fish mortalities they attended in 2013.

“It has been proven under laboratory conditions that disease can be transferred on nets to fish, and I feel as anglers we have a duty of care to look into any avenue that can help ensure healthier fish stocks.

Drennan Barnsley Blacks win Championship title in the Angling Trust Winter League finalWith the Gloucester Canal coloured up from overnight water movements to the Bristol reservoirs, the 120 competitors of this year’s Angling Trust Winter League Final on July 6th were expecting a few bites, especially after last week’s good practice match. Unfortunately for most it was a struggle and a long wait between bites as most of the fish switched off in the bright and sometimes breezy conditions. Only with a couple of hours to go did the bream on Hempstead Bend start to feed and four anglers here started to catch on the pole, one angler even subduing a 7lb carp on his light bream gear. With little major action reported elsewhere the winner was expected from these pegs.
